Sample Research Questions
Here are examples of good topics and research questions for argumentation essays and research papers. Most of these research questions will need to be narrowed down further to focus on one or two aspects. Not all of the topics listed are suitable for all types of writing assignments, so if you aren’t sure which topic is most appropriate for your assignment, check with your faculty member.
Art & Music

- What are the benefits of having children learn to play a musical instrument?
- Is art/music therapy the best form of treatment for specific disorders? Why?
- How does mental illness play a role in creativity?

- How does mass communication affect politics, war, global awareness, and social norms?
- Should televised sexual and violent content be censored by the government? Are mandatory ratings a form of censorship?

- How will has the Internet affected the newspaper industry? Is this a good or bad thing?
- How has streaming video services affected advertising and network programming?

- How has the digital divide changed relationships/workplace communication? If so how, and why?

- Many consider today’s justice system to be too slow. What improvements could be made to expedite the system without sacrificing due process?

- How does society view aging and the aged? Is this different than 10 years ago? 20 years ago?
- How will a growing aging population affect American society?
- Should the current Social Security program be reformed? How?
- Are improvements needed in the way we care for the health of the elderly? If so, what?
- What quality of life do seniors face, now and in the future?
- How can we, as a society, improve end-of-life care?
- Why is there little pretend play among young children in many societies, and what difference does this make in later development?

- Should men have mandatory paternity leave?
- How has the media (TV, film, social networks) changed the social stigma of mental illness?
- Is there a correlation to academic achievement, behavior problems or creativity and birth order?
- Is an addiction to gambling as serious as an addiction to drugs or alcohol? (pick any addiction)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Have misdiagnoses caused doctors to over-prescribe Ritalin? Should we develop new diagnostic procedures (which ones?) to curb this trend?
- What differences, if any, are there in children who are raised by stay-at-home moms and working moms?
- Does society today still discriminate against working mothers who wish to have flexible work schedules?
