Interlibrary Loan

Once you have verified that the VSC libraries do not own the book or video you want, use Search Other Libraries to find books and videos in the Worldcat catalog that may be available to you through interlibrary loan. (There is also a link to Search Other Libraries in the Library catalog.) Once you locate an item, select Request Item through Interlibrary Loan from the detail view and login to your interlibrary loan account using your VSC Web Services ID (portal username) and password. You can also use our Interlibrary Loan Request Form if you already have all of the information about the item you wish to request.

Getting books and videos through interlibrary loan can take up to 2 weeks. Please make your requests early in the semester. Loan periods and renewals are determined by the lending library. If you would like to renew interlibrary loan material, contact Hartness Library at 1-800-431-0025 or by email at hartness@vsc.edu at least a week before the due date on the item. If we can’t renew your item or have a question, we will contact you email address you specified in the request.

All interlibrary loan items are returned to Hartness Library. Return interlibrary loan materials by dropping them off at the front desk or library return box at any CCV academic center, Vermont Tech campus, or Vermont State College library (in the original packaging if available). You can also mail items back to the Hartness Library in the original packaging using the return mailing label provided.

Before requesting an article through interlibrary loan, search our Journals & Newspapers by Title page to see if we subscribe to the publication in one of our databases. When you are searching library databases with the full-text limiter off, you may find abstract-only citations without the full text of the article. Select “Place Request” on the citation to request full-text for the article. You can also use our Interlibrary Loan Request Form if you already have all of the information about the item you wish to request.

Getting articles from other libraries can take from 2 to 10 days. Most articles will be emailed to you; articles from before 1995 are generally mailed to you as photocopies and are yours to keep. If we can’t fill your request or have a question, we will contact you using the email address you specified in the request.

Access your Interlibrary loan account to monitor or cancel your requests from other colleges — both inside and outside the VSC. Login with your VSC Web Services ID (portal username) and password. Once logged in, you can place a request, see request details, cancel the request and change communication preferences. Under communication preferences, you can opt to have the library send updates to contact information that is different from the information we have on file. You are encouraged to enable email updates. You also have the option for us to text you with updates.

There are some types of resources that are not available through interlibrary loan. These include:

• Textbooks
• Reference books
• Course reserve books
• Rare books or archival materials
• Microfilm
• Dissertations
• Technical reports
• Genealogy-related material
• Individual issues or bound volumes of periodicals
• Selected videos

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve a violation of copyright law.
