Course-Related Instruction (40 minutes or more as needed)
Librarians work with faculty to craft an instruction session geared to a specific assignment or course. Course and assignment-related instruction may include topic selection, demonstration of research tools, research methods, evaluation of Web resources, and citation help. Instruction generally takes place in a computer lab, but may be held in a classroom, as needed. During the instruction session, students may begin or continue research with the guidance of the librarian.
This type of instruction is also helpful halfway through the semester to reinforce the principles taught in the library orientation.
New Student Orientation (30 to 40 minutes)
New students are introduced to the library’s online catalog, subject guides, and databases. Instruction is held in a computer lab to provide students with a hands-on experience. If a computer lab is unavailable, the class will meet in a classroom equipped with a computer and LCD projector. The orientation may be subject-specific or assignment-specific as requested.
Hartness Library Tours (10 to 20 minutes)
An overview of the Hartness Library’s layout and collections, as well as a brief introduction to our online resources, is available upon request for classes, faculty, and groups.
Individual Consultations (as needed)
Students and faculty may request to work one-on-one with a Reference Librarian in the library. Consultations may be impromptu or scheduled for up to an hour to avoid interruptions. Appointments are made via email, phone, or in-person. Individual consultations allow the student or faculty member uninterrupted research assistance with a librarian.
