How to Use netLibrary to Find the
Complete Text of Books
1. Go to the Hartness
Library web site at http://hartness.vsc.edu
2.
Mouse over Books & More and click on Netlibrary and e-books.
3.
Scroll down the page and click on Connect
to netLibrary.
4. At Hartness Library
locations, you’ll go right into the database.
5. To use this database from home, you’ll need
to ask someone at the main Hartness Library to create
an account for you, including username and password. Call 1-800-431-0025 or email library@vtc.edu.
6.
Enter your search terms and either leave the radio button selection below
the box at Keyword, or move it to Title, Author, or Full Text,
depending on what you’re searching for.
Requiring your term to be in the title will bring up the least amount of
results; requiring it to be anywhere in the full text will bring up the most.
7.
Click on the red Search
button.
8. A
list of results will appear. If you
don't get any results, try your search again, selecting another option for the
radio buttons (Keyword, Title, Author, Full Text), or use different terms.
10. Click on View
this eBook under the title of a book you're
interested in.
11. Two frames will appear.
12. The frame on the left has tabs for Search,
Dictionary, Contents, eContent Details, and Notes.
13. The Contents appear as the default in that
frame. You can scroll down and view the
list of chapters. When you click on one
of the chapter titles, the first page of that chapter will appear in the right
frame.
14. To view the second or subsequent pages, click
on the red Next>> button at
the top right.
15. If you're looking for a particular word(s)
within the book, click on the Search tab.
16. Put a search term(s) in the box below Search this eContent
and click Search.
17. The pages that contain your search term will
appear, one at a time. Your term(s) will
be highlighted in yellow.
18. To move to the next occurrence, click on Next>>
below where it says Search results in the left frame.
19. To print the page you have displayed, first
click anywhere on the page to select that frame. Then click on your browser's Print button, or click on File, then on Print in the drop-down box. You
may only print one page at a time.
20. Some eBooks use
Adobe Acrobat format instead of plain web pages. Print these by clicking on Show Acrobat Tools, then on the printer
icon.
21. Double-clicking on a word in the right frame will
bring up the option to look up the word in the Dictionary.
22. Alternatively you may use the Dictionary tab in the left frame.
23. The eContent Details
tab shows you information about the book.
You’ll need this for your bibliography.
24. On the home screen, you also have the option
of choosing an Advanced Search. This allows you to limit the search by Year,
Publisher, and/or Language.
