Using LexisNexis Academic

 

 

 1.  Go to the Hartness Library web site at http://hartness.vsc.edu

 2.  Mouse over Articles below the name of the library and click on All Databases in the dropdown menu.

 3.  In the alphabetical guide at the top, click on the letter L, then on LexisNexis Academic. 

4.      At Hartness Library locations, you’ll go right into the database.

5.      At home, enter your Maple User ID (initials, birth month, birth day, zero).

6.      Then enter your Maple password (initials, last four digits of your social security number).

 7.  The first screen combines search boxes for the most popular features: News, Get a Case, and Company Information.

 8.  There are also five categories on the left side of the screen to choose from, and many subcategories, as listed below:

 

News

Quick News Search, Guided News Search (includes General News, Today's News, U.S. News, World News, News Wires, News Transcripts, Arts & Sports News, Non-English Language News, Business News, Legal News, University News, Medical News)

Business

News, Accounting Literature, Company Information, Business Resources

Legal Research

Secondary Literature, Case Law, Codes & Regulations, International Legal Materials, Patent Research, Career Information

Medical

Medical News, Medical Journals, Abstracts

Reference

Biographical Information, Country Profiles, Polls & Surveys, Quotations, State Profiles, World Almanac

 9.  Click on one of the main categories, then on a subcategory.

10.  Different categories are searched slightly differently and include a variety of ways to limit the information found.

11.  All of the subcategories can be searched by putting keywords in an open search box.

12.  Some subcategories allow you to specify a particular source in a pull-down menu.

13.  Sometimes you can change the time frame you're searching by using a pull-down menu.  Note that the default is usually the previous six months, so in most cases you'll want to change to a longer time period..

14.  Some subcategories let you narrow your search by adding additional terms in a separate box.           

15.  To view results, click on the underlined title of the publication.

16.  Print and E-mail buttons are on the top right side of the screen.

17.  A Help link is found in the top righthand corner and to the left of that a How Do I? link answers frequently asked questions.                                                                               6/22/05
