1. Go to the Hartness Library web site at http://hartness.vsc.edu

2. Mouse over Articles below the name of the library and click on All Databases in the dropdown menu.

3. In the alphabetical guide at the top, click on the beginning letter of the database you’d like to use, then on the database name itself. Alternatively you can scroll down and review information about all the databases before selecting one.

4. At Hartness Library locations, you'll go directly into the database after clicking on the database name.

5. At home, enter your Blackboard User ID (initials, birth month, birth day, zero).

6. Then enter your Blackboard password (initials, last four digits of your social security number).

7. Click on Login.

8. Below the open search box you may limit your results to Full Text (complete articles), Peer Reviewed (scholarly articles), to a particular Periodical title, or a Published Date range.

9. Put your search terms in the box next to Find: and click on the gray Search button.

10. Once you have a list of results, click on any title to bring whatever is available for that article to the screen: a citation (location information), abstract (summary), and/or full text of the article.

11. Alternatively you may go directly to the full text by clicking on HTML Full Text, Linked Full Text, or PDF Full Text (the latter only if you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer or are willing to install it).

12. To print, e-mail the article, or save it to a disk, click on Print, E-mail, or Save at either the top or bottom of the screen.

13. When you click on Print, the Print Manager comes up. You have options to print either the citation/abstract or full text (when available). Then click on the gray Print button. Click from this screen to Estimate Number Of Pages of the article.

14. When the Print box comes up, click OK.

15. Click on the appropriate button to E-mail or Save your results instead.

16. You may also click on the Add button to the right of the article citation in the results list. This adds it to a Folder. Later click View Folder at the top right.

17. Instead of the Basic Search, you may choose an Advanced Search by clicking on that tab to the right of the Basic Search tab.

18. The Subjects tab available from the Basic and Advanced Search screens lets you browse the list of subjects in the database. In CINAHL you'll see instead CINAHL Headings.

19. Help is available by clicking on Help at the top right of the screen. 9/15/06
