Using Britannica
1. Go to the Hartness Library web site at http://hartness.vsc.edu
2. Click on Reference
in the center of the page under the
library name.

Click on Encyclopedia Britannica.
4.
At Hartness
Library locations, you’ll go right into the database.

At home, enter
your Maple User ID (initials, birth month, birth day, zero).
6.
Then enter
your Maple password (initials, last four digits of your social security
number).
7.
Click on Login.
8.
Choose which of the Britannica products (Encyclopedia Britannica,
Britannica Student Encyclopedia, Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia, Britannica
Concise Encyclopedia, Britannica Internet Guide, and/or Video & Media)
you'd like to search by clicking in the box(es) to the left of each item.
9. Then enter your search in the open search
box.
10. Use quotation
marks around phrases if you want them to appear word for word in your search
results. Tip for names: Type last name first name and
include both words in quotation marks.
Example: "hoover herbert"
11. You may also use
natural language and type a question in the box. Example: "What is the longest river in
12. Click on Go.
13. From the list of
results, click on the titles to see more information.
14. Alternatively you
can click on the individual parts of the record below the title, next to where
it says View. All or some of these are
included: Article, Images, Index Entry (outline of the
whole subject, with links), Maps, Tables, Yearbooks.
15. When you have one
article on the screen, you can print by clicking on Print this article
above the article itself. Then either
pull down File to Print and click OK, or click your
browser's print button.
16. To e-mail the
article instead, click on E-mail this article above the article
itself. Enter the e-mail address you're
sending the article to, along with optional information (Your Name, Your
E-mail, Comments) if you'd like. Click Submit.
17. A useful feature,
also found above the article itself, is a link to Cite this article. Both APA and MLA citation forms are provided.
18. On the right side
of the results screen, you'll see a section called Additional Content. Options here include Journals and
magazines, as well as other Britannica products that have content related
to your search. Click on the titles to
find out more.
19. At the bottom of
the main search screen, there are search boxes for Merriam-Webster
Collegiate Dictionary and Collegiate Thesaurus.
20. In the Browse
section below that, you can try A-Z Browse (the traditional alphabetical
arrangement), World Atlas, Timeline Browse, Subject Browse,
or Year in Review Browse.
