Using
1.
Go to the Hartness Library web site at http://hartness.vsc.edu
2.
Mouse over Articles below the
name of the library and click on All
Databases in the dropdown menu.
3.
In the alphabetical guide at the top, click on the letter L, then on Literature Resource Center.
4.
At
Hartness Library locations, you’ll go right into the
database.
5.
At
home, enter your Maple User ID (initials, birth month, birth day,
zero).
6.
Then
enter your Maple password (initials, last four digits of your social security
number).
7.
In
the box under Author Search, you may enter an author's name, last name
first.
8.
Click on Search.
9.
Across the top of the results list for your search, you'll find index
tabs with more information about the author: Biographies;
Literary
Criticism, Articles, & Work
Overviews;
Bibliographies;
Additional
Resources
(generally web sites); and Literary-Historical
Timeline. Click on the one you're interested
in.
10. A list of results will appear. Click on the underlined blue title,
except in the Literary-Historical Timeline, where you'll be able to view events
during your author's lifetime in chronological order.
11. When you have one article on the screen,
you may print by clicking on the Print
icon on the upper left. Then either
pull down File
to Print
or click your browser's print button.
12. To e-mail the article instead, click on
the E-mail
icon on the upper left. Enter the
e-mail address. Click Send.
13. Underneath the Author Search box, you'll
see the following Other Searches available: Title,
Advanced,
Keyword,
Authors
by Type,
and Literary-Historical
Time.
14. Title
lets you search for a title of a work by matching any of the words you enter,
all of the words you enter, or the exact title. Below that you can narrow your search by
author name.
15. Advanced
Search
lets you use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), as well as limit to particular
document types or individual Gale literature databases.
16. Keyword
Search
enables you to search all available authors for a specific word or
concept.
17. Authors
by Type lets
you search by name, gender, birth and death dates, ethnicity, nationality,
genre, theme, and literary movement or time period.
18. Literary-Historical
Timeline
lets you enter a date range and then view events occurring during that
period.
19. Help
is available at the top center of every screen.
20. Search
Tips
are available at the bottom of every screen.
21. A comprehensive Research
Guide,
covering everything from choosing a topic to drafting and revising a research
paper, is also available at the bottom of every screen.
22. Click on Gale
Databases
at the bottom of every screen to view the list of the other Gale databases we
subscribe to.
