Searching the Art & Architecture Image Database
How to Search for Images
Artist name - enter the artist’s last name.
Time Period - enter any of the following search terms:
- 17th Century
- 18th - 19th Century
- Ancient Near East
- Early Medieval
- North American
- Stone Age
Medium - enter any one of the following search terms:
- Graphic Design
- Illum Manuscript
- Mixed Media
- Painted Pottery
- Stained Glass
Image Detail - the database can also search the short descriptions of each slide using the exact term you have entered. Keep in mind that the descriptions are quite minimal and do not all use the same terminology, and your search terms must match the words in the short descriptions very precisely. Try just one or two words or several variations of your search terms.
- a search for “print” will not necessarily find an etching
- a search for “basil” will find St. Basil’s and everything described as a basilica
- a search for "india" will find images from India, North American Indian art, art by people named India, and art made from Indian silk
Image Number - once you have found an image using an artist, period, or keyword search, you may save its number for quicker access on later occasions.
