Embedded Librarian Program

Sign up for Summer 2013

The Embedded Librarian Program is designed for classes that have a significant research component requiring library resources. If your course does not involve a lot of research, but you want to offer your students an introduction to the Hartness Library, consider adding the Library Orientation to your Moodle course, instead.

The Embedded Librarian program provides research-based courses with a designated librarian who will work with your students throughout the semester. Your assigned librarian will work with your students to:

  • narrow paper topics and brainstorm ideas for research
  • identify the best keywords and search terms for a topic
  • find books, articles, and scholarly websites appropriate to college-level work
  • locate examples of source citation formats
  • answer any library or research questions

Please keep in mind that an embedded librarian is not necessary for students to contact the library; they can always Ask a Librarian via IM, text, email, and phone. Only request an embedded librarian if you feel that working with a specific librarian for an extended time period is integral to student success in your course(s).

Types of Embedded Librarians:

Semester-Long Class Librarian (Moodle):

  • Best for writing and research intensive courses that utilize Moodle regularly.
  • Your assigned librarian will maintain a "Library Forum" linked to a button in the course sidebar of your Moodle course.
  • The librarian will maintain this forum all semester long.
  • The librarian will respond to student posts Monday - Friday during regular business hours.

Guest Class Librarian (Moodle):

  • Best for courses that regularly use Moodle and have just one or two research assignments.
  • The librarian will assist your students with the specific project during the week(s) of this assignment.
  • The librarian can either maintain the "Library Forum" linked to a button in the course sidebar, or can embed an assignment or library activity within a specific week of your course to maximize exposure to the librarian.
  • The librarian will respond to student posts Monday - Friday during regular business hours.

Class Librarian (non-Moodle):

  • Best if you are not using Moodle at all, but still want your students to interact with a librarian on a regular basis for specific assignments.
  • Your assigned librarian will communicate with your students via email to provide instructions, answer questions, and help with research projects throughout the semester or at a particular time.
  • The librarian will respond to student emails Monday - Friday during regular business hours.
