Embedded Librarian Program
Summer 2012 Request Form |
Faculty may request that a librarian be embedded in their Moodle course site(s) to facilitate the research process. Please keep in mind that an embedded librarian is not necessary for students to contact the library; they can always Ask a Librarian via IM, text, email, and phone. Only request an embedded librarian if you feel that working with a specific librarian for an extended time period is integral to student success in your course(s).
Types of Embedded Librarian:
Semester-Long Class Librarian (Moodle): If you are teaching a writing and research intensive course that requires extensive use of library resources, consider requesting this type of embedded librarian. The librarian maintains a "Class Librarian" discussion board forum linked to a button in the course sidebar. Your librarian will maintain this forum all semester long where she/he will post helpful instructions, answer questions, and work with students throughout the semester on various assignments and projects. Your embedded librarian can also help you create homework assignments and other activities that require use of the library to enable students to become savvy researchers.
Guest Class Librarian (Moodle): If you have just one or two research projects, consider requesting a librarian for a particular week or time period within the semester. The librarian will assist your students with the specific project during the week(s) of this assignment. The librarian can either maintain the "Class Librarian" discussion board forum linked to a button in the course sidebar, or can embed an assignment or library activity within a specific week of your course to maximize exposure to the librarian.
Class Librarian (non-Moodle): This is the best option if you are not using Moodle at all, but still want your students to interact with a librarian on a regular basis. The embedded librarian will work with you to communicate with your students via email to provide instructions, answer questions, and help with research projects throughout the semester or at a particular time.
Regardless of what type of embedded librarian you think best suits your class, once the librarian is enrolled in your course(s), he/she will help students:
- narrow paper topics and brainstorm ideas for research
- identify the best keywords and search terms for a topic
- find books in the VSC library catalog
- search for magazine and journal articles
- select appropriate Web-based sources for college-level work
- locate examples of source citation formats
- answer any library or research questions
