The Hartness Library serves as the home lending library for all members of the CCV academic community. Students, staff, and faculty can borrow library materials from all Vermont State College libraries, including the Hartness Library, through the online library catalog. Items are shipped directly to your home for free and should be returned to any CCV center. If an item isn't available, you will be notified within 3 to 5 business days. Typically items arrive within 10 business days, though it depends on the lending library:
- DVDs - 2 weeks
- books & audio materials - 4 weeks
- books from other VSC libraries or through ILL - check due date on item
- Textbooks required for class
- Materials to be used for course reserve, class or group use
- Complete issues of periodicals
- Complete volumes of bound periodicals
- Reference, indexes, or rare books
- Expensive materials or ones that are difficult to ship
- Most genealogy-related materials
- Archival material
How do I request items?
After locating an item in the library catalog, use the "Place Request" form to have the book or DVD sent to you. Review and, if necessary, correct your contact information and submit the form.
How do I know my request to borrow items has been received?
After submitting a request from the library catalog, the following message will appear:
"Your request has been successfully submitted.”
Once the request is filled or checked out it will show up on your Hartness Library account.
How many items can be borrowed at one time?
There is a limit of 5 DVD or VHS items and 15 books which can be checked out at one time. The maximum number of items that can be checked out is 15 (for example, you can check out 5 videos and 10 books or 3 videos and 12 books).
How long can I keep library materials?
What cannot be borrowed?
What if I want to visit a VSC library and borrow directly from there?
If you live near a VSC library, you can borrow materials by going to that library. Instead of a library card, you use your Web Services (Moodle) ID number - you may also need to provide a CCV student ID card or a photo ID, such as a driver's license. There are some limitations on which materials can be checked out, so contact the Calvin Coolidge Library (CSC), Samuel Read Hall Library (LSC), or Willey Library and Learning Center (JSC) for borrowing information. NOTE: UVM is not one of the Vermont State Colleges and CCV students do not have walk-in borrowing access to UVM materials. Interlibrary loan must be used to request materials from the UVM library system.
More About Textbooks
As indicated in the Hartness Library Collection Development Policy, we do not purchase textbooks as part of the collection. The Library is unable to fill requests to borrow textbooks through ILL, since many academic libraries hold the same policy. Go to the CCV Textbook page for more information on purchasing textbooks.
Confidentiality of Library Records
In accordance with the American Library Association’s Policy on Confidentiality of Library Records and Vermont Act 129 (Sec 1.22 VSA chapter 4), the Hartness Library does not reveal any information regarding patron use of the library, unless compelled to do so by a lawfully issued court order, or by permission of the patron. Our relationship with our users is strictly confidential in nature. This policy of confidentiality applies to patron circulation records and to any services rendered by the library staff.
